Get into shape cycling the world from your living room with Widerun

by Team TechnoBanana28th March 2015

  • Now you too can ride a bike on the Great Wall of China or pedal for your life trying to escape from zombies! All from the comfort of your house thanks to Widerun: an interactive bike trainer designed to deliver engaging fitness sessions or just plain old cycling fun through VR headsets or external screens.

All you need is a normal bike (any bike with a wheel radius between 26 to 29 inches can be attached without any adjustments to the Widetun trainer), a VR headset (Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR, Cmoar etc) or external screen (that includes your smart TV) and of course Widerun.

The trainer is capable of measuring speeds upto 30 m/s (100km/h), handle steering range between -30° to 30° and user weight limits have been tested upto 130 kg / 286 lb without any issues. Widerun can operate at 110-220V at 50-60Hz. Unfortunately you cant use your own stationary bike with it (steering would be a problem) but we’re sure those DIYers out there will find a way. Oh and in case you’re worried about sweaty/foggy head mounted displays, feat not, for they are working with About Face to maintain hygiene.

Say goodbye to boring cycling at the gym or your basement and say hello to WideRunning. The training system will track users position and weight and let them know how they are doing. Users will also be able to compare and compete against friends.

The team is currently raising funds on KickStarter (UPDATE: The KickStarter campaign was unsuccessful). We’re really looking forward to this and will provide more details and a review once launched. In the mean time read on below to get a feel for whats in store.

Widerun has created immersive virtual 3D worlds offering an amazing biking experience, which will be available for download from their marketplace. You can check out some images below followed by a couple trailers:
